Most of our trips back home have been to attend family events such as weddings and funerals, so it was nice after not being there for a few years to go for our own reasons, and more importantly, when we actually needed to get away for a while. We also planned to bring back an old trunk that had been my Great-Grandmother's when she moved to Canada... if the measurements were right and it fit in the car. Gordon had worked around 36 hours the days before we left, so after sleeping in Saturday morning, we got off to a slow start. It took a long time to get away from the city, as there was tonnes of Thanksgiving traffic. We also got to see all the ugly sprawl that's built up out past Canada's Wonderland. The drive to Thunder Bay isn't too eventful, but it was nice to see the yellows and oranges of Autumn in full swing. When we got into town the TacoTime drive thru was closed, so we headed over to Gord's sisters to visit Pepper (aka Max) who we had sent up to live there two years' ago.
We then headed off to his other sister's house where we stayed over, since they have a finished basement and we wouldn't be in the way at all. The next day was Thanksgiving and we had double-duty, eating turkey dinner with my family at my sister's for lunch, then heading back to our homebase for Gordon's family dinner. Although all that food was great, the highlight was getting to spend more time with my niece, Bria.
Tuesday was spent mostly with my sister and Bria, while Wednesday I hung out with Mom and her brother, who visits quite frequently lately, and also just bought himself an RV. Gordon visted some friends and I sorted through some stuff Mom wanted me to figure out if I wanted in the old trunk.
Thursday brought the third Taco Time lunch in a row, and more getting to know Bria, who was in a really good mood that day.
We left Friday morning, but again, were in no hurry so we didn't get up super-early. There was still frost on the car when we left though, and as you can see, the trunk fit nicely and was actually full of stuff to bring back (including Christmas presents to save on shipping). We hit Persian Man on the way to Mom's to say goodbye, and then spent a last few minutes with bria before heading out.
On the way back, we stopped for a while at the recently redesigned Terry Fox Lookout. It's much better than what it was, and a fitting tribute.
